…………a Legacy Worth Rebuilding
If we look at cultures globally we find a particularly poignant vignette in the young girl readying herself on her wedding day. The new bride to be, in her preparative stages for her beloved’s sake, is doted on by fussing bridesmaids with her maternal guardian hovering attentively. The room in which they are getting ready is charged with the love and mutual respect between mom and daughter. There are intimate moments of shared laughter and flashes of understanding exchanged between gentle eyes.
It’s really a rite of passage that is imbued with such tender care – the kind that validates the angst inherent in becoming a new wife without sacrificing the pure joy and privilege of being together on such a special day. Cultures are founded on these cardinal moments because, for survival, they ensure a compelling narrative that will mesmerize the hearts and minds of little girls for generations to come.
We feel the idea of a rite of passage is an apt analogy to explain why men are re-embracing wet shaving again. We believe wet shaving to play an integral role in the development of the male identity as seen in the larger context of his community.
As was practiced in the days of the Cro-Magnons, who had to hunt for food to keep their people alive – one could see the safety razor and its doubled edged blade in contemporary culture to symbolize a man’s visceral commitment to provide for his.
His daily dedication to maintain his wet shaving ritual then reflects a much deeper drive, one that reconnects with his ancestral oath to defend and protect his kinfolk. Perhaps on some level his psyche rationalizes that if he is resolute in his commitment he somehow transmutes into someone who can be depended on, relied on for guidance and sustenance. And that this vision is a premonition spurring on the actualization of a genetically programmed archetype of sorts incubating in the heart of every little boy.
Every day, as he stands in front of his mirror, his little boy sees a man committed – a warrior in training, a man readying himself and poised for action. His daughter is enamored and develops a deep respect for what is inherently foreign to her feminine sensibility as something ‘dad has to do’. This respect, as she grows, will evolve into a deep trust and loyalty that will become part of the skillset she will use to nurture her marriage and children to maturity.
If you consider the primal nature of the survival instinct it then becomes apparent and therefore plausible that technology and the ensuing complexities of modern day life have diluted the irrefutable clear focus every young man should cultivate to flourish in his societal role as husband, father and leader in the community.
It’s the dedication of a simple commitment to a wet shave routine, that we believe can be the spark (however small) to helping a father show his son that he is capable of cultivating a life of self-reliance, positive change, respect for and from peers, and win the trust of the down trodden and distrusting.
In time all wet shavers who relish the exercise for its own sake, are bound to discover that their passion for the process is connected to a deep sense of calm and craftsmanship that has the potential to help men build a lasting legacy with their sons.
