Five Steps to a Luxurious Lather Filled Shaving Mug
What we have here for our gentlemen readers is a veritable fail-safe life hack for making that quintessential manly mug lathering of shaving cream. Avoid the harsh chemical environment of a canned cream and make your own authentic lather from a cake of top quality men’s shaving soap. You want to know how? Yes? OK let’s show you:
Step 1: Get the Gear Together
If you going to create luxurious lathering you are going to need a great shaving soap (shaped for a mug), a mug like grand-pappie used, a shaving brush, a bowl, an emollient (olive oil will do) and some water.
We recommend picking a good quality shaving soap that will go with ritual. If you are going to spend some quality time creating that precious and luxurious leather, don’t let the soap ruin it! Some wet shave subscriptions carry some really good soap that will be ideal for this.
We will add that a shaving brush limited in length could pose gripping issues when submerged below the shaving cream. In addition a mug that sports a customized handle to facilitate protracted holding periods is advantageous.
Again, we suggest having some really quality mug for your ritual. If you are the true connoisseur, how about shopping for some classic vintage lathering mug similar to the ones used by grandpa?
If you are all about kitting your wet shaving set with some cool and elaborate gear to bring out the true experience and essence, we have seen some beautiful vintage shaving mug pieces that will truly spice up your wet shave set. A tad snobbish but welcome to the wet shave cult!
Step 2: Cut the bar to make it fit
It’s seldom that you find a mug that will take the full girth of your shaving soap. This isn’t a problem at all. We suggest you cut up your shaving soap into smaller sizes so that it remains pressed into the bottom. There are specialized proprietary brands shaving soaps that are shaped to insert neatly into the base of your shaving mug.
Step 3: Add the oil
If you can, use oil that has inherent homeopathic benefits (think soothing and or nourishment) such as Kukui nut oil. Sourcing issues and availability might preclude the use of Kukui oil in which case olive oil is more than sufficient.
Step 4: Add hot water to make that soap stick
This step is cardinal to the lather generating process. If your soap rotates or slides around in the bottom of the mug any friction generated from the action of a shaving brush will be neutralized. No friction between brush and soap means no lather formation.
Step 5: The Shaving Brush Must do the Work
With your wet shaving brush, initiate foaming by rotating the brush over the soap in a circular motion. Do it delicately. Don’t use pressure or force that mashes down on the soap. It should be a quick rotation of the shaving brush over the cake of soap. Within the first 30 seconds you should be rewarded with the beginnings of a rich luxurious shaving soap. The rich lather is now ready for application.
As your product is used, simply add small amounts of warm water and repeat step five until the cup and shaving brush is loaded with a luxurious cream.
Making your own lather using the tools above is a rewarding activity that will add enormous pleasure and authenticity to your wet shaving experience.
